On 8 October 2025, MetPac-SA proudly hosted a “Metal Packaging Recovery and Recycling Process Appreciation Day” at Ferrous Metals Processors (FMP) facility in Gauteng. This key strategic event brought together representatives from MetPac-SA member companies and strategic partners, including Department of Forestry, Fishery and Environment (DFFE). The primary objectives of the visit was the site visit by DFFE as part of their annual audit, to showcase FMP’s critical role in environmental sustainability and to offer attendees a deeper appreciation of the ferrous recycling process. The open day highlighted FMP’s proactive and long-term commitment to sustainable recycling practices. FMP is a group of companies committed to constant evolution and contribution in the sector of recycling and local beneficiation. FMP is an industrial-scale operation specialising in the collection, handling, and processing of used ferrous cans, serving as the largest buyer, processor, and distributor in the sector, with advanced capabilities for mass processing and decontamination.
Dr. Ravi Nadar, MetPac-SA’s research analyst, presented an overview of the circular economy and shared updates on MetPac-SA’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) strategy, achievements and challenges. His address provided assurance to members that MetPac-SA is well-positioned to meet legislated EPR goals while driving the growth of the metal packaging circular economy in South Africa. The presentation highlighted the roles of various stakeholders in the ferrous value chain, emphasising the critical contribution of waste pickers in closing the circular loop. Ms. Khosi Mbatha, MetPac-SA’s project leader delivered an insightful overview of the various field projects that are making a significant contribution to environmental sustainability. She emphasised how these initiatives promote resource efficiency, community empowerment, and long-term environmental sustainability. Ms Jolize Labuschagne, General Manager at Lariat Technologies, presented an overview of the Lariat system, highlighting its advanced capabilities and benefits in streamlining waste management processes and facilitating efficient waste-picker payments. She explained how the system enhances transparency, traceability, and financial inclusion within the recycling ecosystem, ultimately supporting a more equitable and sustainable waste value chain.
The plant tour included a visit to the ferrous shredding process, offering participants a first-hand view of FMP’s large-scale metal recycling operation, as well as the FMP aluminium re-smelting plant currently under construction, which will further enhance the facility’s capacity for sustainable metal recovery and circular production.
