On the 20th of May 2025, MetPac-SA proudly hosted a “Metal Packaging Recovery Process Appreciation Day” at one of our strategic post-consumer aluminium packaging recovery and re-melting foundries, GeT Metal Group in Cape Town. The event brought together many of our valued PRO members for a first-hand look at how used beverage cans are reborn into pristine aluminium ingots, ready to return as new cans or power other high-quality metal manufacturing applications across industries.
MetPac-SA members witnessed the full recovery journey, from the arrival of baled used cans to the densification process, and to the intense heat of the furnace (approximately 680 degree Celsius), where process innovation meets sustainability. The tour demonstrated how aluminium, infinitely recyclable, plays a crucial role in reducing landfill waste and conserving energy. The full quality analysis of the re-melt process was demonstrated through complex laboratory analytical techniques, ensuring the melted aluminium meets prescribed metallurgical specifications.
An engaging presentation by Mr. Ebrahim Khan (GeT Metal Group Co-Founder) gave attendees deeper insight into the GeT Metal Group business models based on circularity philosophy. GeT Metal Group remains committed to driving sustainability across every process within all its operations as well as the advanced, globally benchmarked re-melting technologies deployed at their operations.
Dr Kishan Singh, the CEO of MetPac-SA , SA leading metal packaging PRO, presented MetPac-SA’s EPR achievements and strategy proving members with the assurance that the PRO is well positioned to achieve the legislated EPR goals, driving the metal packaging circular economy in SA.
A huge thank you to GeT Metal Group management team and to all our members who joined us, we hope the experience was as enlightening as it was inspiring. Together, we are not just closing the loop on aluminium, we are opening up a future of responsible metal packaging production and consumption.
