Driving Sustainable Metal Packaging Recycling Education

MetPac-SA Signs Memorandum of Understanding with SAWPA

MetPac-SA has formalised a strategic partnership with the SAWPA through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This agreement outlines a collaborative framework aimed at enhancing waste management practices, supporting waste pickers, and advancing recycling and environmental sustainability initiatives.

The MOU is aligned with the requirements set out in Section 18 of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (NEMWA), specifically relating to the obligations of a Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO).

Building on the significant post-consumer metal packaging collection efforts demonstrated by SAWPA, both organisations will work together to integrate informal waste buyers into the formal recycling economy. This includes improving operational systems to enable accurate and efficient reporting of collection volumes.

As part of this collaboration, MetPac-SA will provide comprehensive support to SAWPA waste pickers through the provision of training, tools, and access to market opportunities. This support will include the supply of essential equipment such as scales, trolleys, and personal protective equipment (PPE), as well as contributions towards infrastructure development.

In addition, MetPac-SA will facilitate capacity-building initiatives, including financial literacy training, health and safety training, skills development programmes, and recycling awareness workshops.

MetPac-SA remains committed to promoting the dignity, inclusion, and empowerment of waste pickers across South Africa.
