Driving Sustainable Metal Packaging Recycling Education

Media Report: 2026 Young Researchers’ Pitch Programme

Dr Ravi Nadar Represents MetPac-SA at the 11th Green Youth Indaba

MetPac-SA was honoured to participate in the 11th Green Youth Indaba (GYI) 2026 Young Researchers’ Pitch (YRP) Programme, where Dr Ravi Nadar delivered a presentation titled “Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and the Future of Green Economy Research” on behalf of MetPac-SA. The presentation formed part of the Young Researchers’ Pre-Pitch Workshop held on 11 June 2026.

The session focused on exploring the role of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in advancing sustainable design, circular economy principles, resource efficiency, and environmental innovation. Participants were introduced to South Africa’s packaging sector, the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (NEMWA), EPR regulations, research methodologies, and emerging research opportunities within the green economy.

Dr Nadar highlighted the significance of EPR as a policy mechanism that promotes sustainable production and consumption while supporting waste minimisation, recycling, and circular economy development. The presentation also outlined key research opportunities in areas such as life cycle assessment, waste picker integration, secondary materials markets, infrastructure development, financial models, policy effectiveness, and Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies.

During the presentation, Dr Nadar emphasised the growing importance of research in supporting South Africa’s advancement towards a circular economy. He highlighted how EPR frameworks create opportunities for multidisciplinary research spanning environmental management, sustainable packaging design, waste management systems, digital technologies, policy evaluation, and socio-economic development. Particular attention was given to the role of innovation, data-driven decision-making, and stakeholder collaboration in improving resource recovery, reducing waste to landfill, and creating sustainable livelihoods within the recycling value chain. The session encouraged young researchers to develop practical solutions that contribute to environmental sustainability while supporting national economic and social development objectives

The engagement provided young researchers with valuable insights into research methodology as well as how sustainability policies and EPR frameworks are shaping future research and innovation opportunities in South Africa. The session encouraged participants to explore research that contributes to environmental sustainability, resource efficiency, circular economy systems, and inclusive green growth.

MetPac-SA remains committed to supporting education, research, innovation, and stakeholder development initiatives that contribute to a more sustainable and circular economy for South Africa.
