MetPac-SA Environmental Sustainability Competition

Introduction

As MetPac-SA, a registered Metal Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO), we are mandated to support and report on industry initiatives that advance environmental sustainability and the transition toward a metal packaging circular economy, in alignment with the requirements set by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE).

Theme: Tell Your Story

We are excited to invite all metal packaging stakeholders (raw material suppliers, converters, brand owners, retailers, buy back centers, aggregators and re-melters) to participate in an environmental sustainability competition celebrating impactful initiatives aligned with South Africa’s EPR legislative requirements. Submissions may focus on improvements to metal packaging design for recycling or on process improvements that enhance sustainability, resource efficiency, re-melting, recovery, or circular economy outcomes.

What to Submit

Written technical justification of your environmental sustainability initiative/s together with quantifiable benefits (e.g.

packaging light weighting, material optimisation, reduction in waste, energy or carbon emissions). This is required as a MS Word document of approximately 500 to 700 words, font Arial, size 10, which must include:

i. Organisation, initiative title and description

ii. Implementation date (Since EPR legislation November 2021)

iii. Demonstrated measured benefits against a baseline

iv. Any supporting data, case studies, or visual documentation

1st Prize Trophy + Certificate – Excellence in environmental sustainability + R50 000

2nd Prize Trophy + Certificate – Impactful environmental sustainability + R25 000

3rd Prize Trophy + Certificate – Emerging environmental sustainability leader + R15 000

Note: These prize monies may be directed towards deserving EPR needs within the metal packaging sector in South Africa in the spirit of enhancing collection and recovery of post-consumer metal packaging.
